A delightful railway mug produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1835, featuring a hand coloured transfer printed design depicting a steam engine travelling through the countryside.
The scene has some wonderful details; the train bears the name plate ‘Express' and notice the passengers in the carriage along with the church and the mountains towering above.
This is one of the best and earliest depictions of a steam locomotive that we have in pottery form. It was made to commemorate the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830. Interestingly, variations of the scene were produced by multiple manufactures during the period. Each variation features a locomotive with a different name plate.
Height: 8 cm - Diameter (including handle): 11 cm
With makers mark 'B & L' on the base. In great condition with some spots of discolouration.
