A stunning Chinese lobed fan shape gilt metal box finely decorated with a repousse flying dragon and phoenix amongst a scrolling floral and vine design.
In the Tang style but seemingly a high quality Qing example, it is relatively large and the shape is rare and dragons are seldom seen. I have only been able to find two other examples of this type of box shaped like a fan, one from the Belitung shipwreck and the other from a Tang tomb but now situated in the Shaanxi Museum.
The final image is of another smaller box which has the same method/approach to production which was sold as Tang style at auction and went for $2,000 before fees. I've been unable to find more examples of the style of box with these techniques (the curvature on the border, undecorated underside, high amount of relief around the repousse decoration, and the fineness of detail).
In good overall condition with some light wear and patination commensurate with age.
Height: 4 cm - Length: 16.5 cm - Width: 10 cm - Weight: 275g
