c.1905 Arts & Crafts Liberty & Co Tudric pewter tazza / compote bowl designed by Archibald Knox.
Punched “TUDRIC” mark to base with number 01161 and Solkets mark.
Planished finish covering a shallow bowl with turned-back rim supported on a central pedestal consisting of tri-part foliate stem coming from the domed base and terminating in an egg-shaped knop.
Liberty launched the Tudric pewter range in 1902. Initially they imported and commissioned pieces from producers, but soon invested in the Birmingham firm of W H Haseler and began using the “Solkets” mark.
Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was born on the Isle of Man to Scottish parents. Clearly influenced by Celtic and Manx traditional designs - by 1899 he was designing for Liberty & Co on their Cymric (Silver) range and on their Tudric range (introduced 1902). Knox's designs for Liberty & Co made his style widely known despite his name not appearing on any of the objects. His innovative designs bridged Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Modernism.
Height: 27.5 cm - Bowl Diameter: 25.5 cm
In very good condition with a lovely unpolished patinated finish, has some light patches of oxidization within the bowl.
