Funerary Granary Jar, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 to 220 CE.
An impressive piece of architectural pottery in the form of a storage granary from the Han Dynasty. Raised upon three bear feet with the top of the jar representing a tiled roof along with further decorative sets of grooves to the body. The green glazed surface has a shimmering iridescence formed throughout. Funerary ceramics such as this were inspired by traditional buildings used as storehouses – this granary likely held grains such as wheat and barley for the deceased to use in the afterlife.
Height: 21 cm - Diameter: 18.5 cm - Weight: 1565g
In good condition for its age, some chips to the glaze mainly on the roof but nothing substantial along with aged surface wear throughout.
