An exemplary piece of Victorian Staffordshire pottery in the form of the profile of a wash jug - a salesman’s sample dating from the late 19th century.

Produced to enable the travelling salesman to easily transport and display his range of wares to potential customers.

Compared with other examples I have seen this one showcases more decorating techniques than what is typical - the flowers are hand-painted with raised detail rather than being transferred, and I have only seen one other sample with flow-blue and in that case it was the only decorating technique besides gilt.
