A rare early to mid 20th-century Italian ceramic sculpture of a pirate / buccaneer.
He is dynamically posed standing on a wooden deck base raising a barrel over his head. It is detailed with hand-painted enamel glazes in rich colours, including rust-red trousers, teal sash, and extensive gold gilt highlighting the clothing and accessories. The underside is hand-marked with a cockerel and "ITALY" - seemingly indicating it is the work of Cantagalli.
From my research it seems that a handful of the prominent Italian ceramic manufacturers produced these types of figures, although I have failed in finding another example by Cantagalli / with this cockerel mark besides the musketeer figure I also have listed.
Height: 26 cm - Base 11 x 10.5 cm
In good overall condition with a difficult to spot chip on a frill on one of his boots (2nd to last photo)
