A significant Chinese Northern Song (960 - 1279) - Jin Dynasty (1115 - 1234) Cizhou jar of compressed globular form with raised rib detailing.
The ovoid body rises from a short foot up towards a lipped rim where the shoulders are flanked by a pair of ribbed strap handles. Mostly covered in a rich blackish-brown glaze which contrasts with the sharply defined raised ribs and X detail on the body. In total there are 49 horizontal ribs and 2 X's.
There is one crack to the rim, but it does not extend into the shoulder, and a tiny chip on one of ribs (view the last 2 photos of the jar)
There was some residue towards the neck which was easily removable, but I have left traces of it.. it seemed like calcium deposit, perhaps indicating it was once buried?
Large in scale probably produced during the 12th century. Jars of this type were made at various kilns in northern China that produced the varieties of wares classed as Cizhou ware, named after the kiln site in Cizhou county, Hebei province. Culturally these types of ribbed jar are significant and are highly sought after.
Height: 26 cm - Diameter: 25 cm - Base diameter: 10 cm
It will be sent via Parcelforce and insured via Overland Express (I will cover the insurance cost)
It has been reviewed remotely by a couple of curators and by Peter Combs of Bidamount.com, who all believe it to appear genuine but they have not physically handled it - I can share the video of Peter's review upon request if you desire. I have also personally compared the glaze with a couple of Cizhou examples at a nearby museum and it is consistent.
