A lovely vintage textile art piece depicting Elisa from The Wild Swans fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

Flaunting a mid-century style, utilizing appliqué, embroidery, and other fabric elements along with beads and metal rings. The artwork shows the princess with stylized yellow hair and a dark crown holding a large plant which represents the stinging nettles she gathers to weave shirts for her cursed swan brothers, a task which she performs while maintaining a vow of silence. This takes place after she has fled her wicked stepmother's influence and before she is crowned. However, she is often depicted as a crowned figure in art due to her royal birth and eventual vindication, thus it is a popular artistic choice to show her in an elevated state fitting her ultimate victory and marriage to a king.

The figure's garment is made from various textured materials, including a dark pink silk-like fabric and a dark-grey patterned textile, creating a distinctive graphic and slightly sombre illustration of the princess during her period of hardship, which is framed in light wood with a gold inner border.

Simply signed 'Sue' on the picture and scribed on the back "Elsie.. Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tale The Wild Swans 1968" perhaps referencing the Paul Hamlyn's 1968 publication of the tale and its illustrations, or perhaps just coincidence. I wonder whether it is an early work by Sue Stone, she was born in 1952 but her mother was a talented seamstress who was professionally trained as a tailor so Sue was surrounded by cloth and making at this time.
