A 19th century framed watercolour landscape by London-born artist David Hall McKewan RI (1816–1873), a well-regarded Victorian landscape painter and pupil of David Cox. McKewan exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-colours, with his work today held in major public collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum.
The painting depicts a tranquil, expansive lake or river scene framed by tall trees on the right bank, where figures are gathered near a docked punt and along the grassy shore. Beyond the reflective water, low-lying woodland and cottages sit at the foot of a prominent, hazy mountain ridge under a light-filled sky. Executed with soft, delicate washes and subtle tonal g\yradations, the composition highlights McKewan’s mastery of Victorian atmospheric perspective and natural lighting.
The artwork is set within a multi-line stepped mount bearing a printed artist name below and is housed in a gilt frame with twist-moulding detail.
In terms of condition, there is foxing and minor discoloration visible on the left side of the paper, though the main visual composition retains good colour and clarity.
Frame: 59.5 x 43.5 cm - Painting: 36.25 x 21 cm
