A stunning early to mid 19th century hand-carved wooden Indian dowry chest / marriage coffer featuring deeply recessed relief carvings of floral and teardrop motifs and a top adorned with scrolling vine patterns. A chunky iron chain and latch mechanism secures the lid, which is further reinforced with decorative metal studs.
The chest is supported by four wooden wheels decorated with a carved spoke design, allowing it to be moved and was likely intended to be passed between the brides family around a table. The sides are reinforced with metal studs and small iron ring handles whilst the back remains unadorned, showcasing the natural grain and aged patina of the dark wood.
This piece now serves as a significant example of traditional Indian folk furniture, and was historically used to either store a bride's valuables and linens or presented by a bride's family to her prospective husband. They are more commonly seen in a larger scale and without such deep carving.
Length/width: 43 x 23.5 cm - Height: 26.75 cm - Weight: 5.1 KG
In good overall condition with surface wear and minor loss and slight splitting to the wood in areas attesting to its age and historical use.
