A fine example of traditional Peruvian folk art, a meticulously carved and pyro-engraved mate burilado, or story gourd. The gourd, which has been dried and prepared, has an organic, pear-like form. The entire surface is covered in intricate, hand-carved and burnt designs, created using a technique passed down through generations in regions of Peru.
The decoration is executed in a continuous narrative style, traditionally depicting scenes of daily life, agricultural cycles, religious festivals, or historical events. The carving visible in this example features dense, complex scenes of human and animal figures, possibly hunting or participating in a communal activity, set within a stylized jungle or landscape. The upper section is decorated with intricate geometric and floral border bands. The natural, light brown hue of the gourd provides a strong contrast to the dark, fine lines of the pyro-engraving. This piece is a genuine, collectible example of indigenous South American folk art.
